August 2020

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
This month's newsletter features an in house short documentary, Then and Now.
I met Lawrence Whiteside, an 85yr old New York native, outside a restaurant early June as he was telling personal tales/stories of the Civil Rights movement in the 60s and how the shoulder held video camera amplified the movement by exposing the rest of America to the dehumanization of black people in the South.
Filmed on Juneteenth, Then and Now presents history through his lens;
From the harsh realities of a not so distant past, the hard fought triumphs to the cautiously optimistic future.

SP Sounds Vol 001 | Side Projects
Split into three acts, this playlist is derived from conversations, expectations, and feelings relating to Summer 2020
Act 1 | Disbelief, Escape
Songs  1-6

It’s been a strange start to the year. A series of twists and turns that no one asked for.
But at least we have summer to look forward to. Right?
Act 2 | Reflection, Acceptance
Songs 7-10

This is not the summer I had in mind. The streets are hot, literally and figuratively.
My friends are inside, restaurants are outside and they still don’t have respect for Black lives.
This is not what I had in mind.
I suppose it’s not all bad. More time talking to family, less money spent, a few reckonings.
And the park is the new Disney World, night club and gym all rolled into one.
Act 3 | Enjoyment, Hope
Songs 11-13

Maybe we can do something with this summer after all. Maybe it’ll be the most memorable one yet. Maybe...

Summer 20 | Cartel Creative Clique
Cartel Creative Clique is an ever-evolving brand rooted in a group like mentality of doing things. "The Clique" started as a DJ collective and slowly turned into a lifestyle brand. Think of us as the clique or team you always wanted to be a part of. And with this Summer ’20 playlist, we are gladly welcoming you into our arms. Through our song selection, we aspired to juxtapose the lo-fi essence of beach vibes with the rugged soul synonymous with New York. By using music to capture a New York moment set in the summer, we hope that with us, you'll become better, feel better and groove better.

Homeroom | Homeroom Collective
At Homeroom, our mission is to cultivate inclusive communities, inspire collaboration, empower women to reach their full potential by sharing their gifts with the world, and celebrate the glow up. While we miss connecting with our community IRL we are still jamming and making the most out of the current situation. Music is crucial. So is nature. Get outside. Wear your mask!

The Top of my Todo list

By Paul Graham

A palliative care nurse called Bronnie Ware made a list of the biggest regrets of the dying.
Her list seems plausible. I could see myself — can see myself — making at least 4 of these 5 mistakes.

1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
2. I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.
3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.
4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

If you had to compress them into a single piece of advice, it might be: don't be a cog.
The 5 regrets paint a portrait of post-industrial man, who shrinks himself into a shape that fits his circumstances, then turns dutifully till he stops.
The alarming thing is, the mistakes that produce these regrets are all errors of omission.
You forget your dreams, ignore your family, suppress your feelings, neglect your friends, and forget to be happy. Errors of omission are a particularly dangerous type of mistake, because you make them by default.
I would like to avoid making these mistakes. But how do you avoid mistakes you make by default?
Ideally you transform your life so it has other defaults. But it may not be possible to do that completely.
As long as these mistakes happen by default, you probably have to be reminded not to make them.
So I inverted the 5 regrets, yielding a list of 5 commands
Don't ignore your dreams; don't work too much; say what you think; cultivate friendships;
be happy. Which I then put at the top of the file I use as a todo list.
