All That For Something True
Raia Was

The ebb and flow of making an album - more like a deep sea dive if I’m honest.

I have yet to go into the process of making an album knowing exactly what I’m going to make. It’s often more about improvising and experimenting until I start to sense a sonic palate forming. That can also feel like a preoccupation with certain sounds or textures that keep calling me back. I’m definitely a music before lyrics person. I feel sound so deeply and my pursuit is always about getting to a place in the music that can nudge the words out.

And by nudge I really mean pry? Or coax? Lure? When I get close to the thing I really want to say I often clam up or suddenly get super sleepy or turned around. I have to act fast. I always have a mic up and ready so that when I feel the words near I can go right in. And I often use much of my first takes (especially on this new album Captain Obvious). In those moments you can hear how new the lyrics feel to me. That’s the sort of intangible thing that makes a recording special.

Making an album is a lot about just being willing to go back in everyday, to keep searching and muscling through the darkness. And then when you get a little glimmer of something true, a spark almost within reach, you dive deeper.

I dedicate
Anthony Coleman
As the weather cools, hearts warm to thoughts of another fall of false feelings and love’s glances.
In leaf's swirl and sweet breeze, two souls meet above.
Amid autumn's splendor, their fate unwinds,
Walking hand in hand through vibrant glades, love binds.

In autumn's shade, their love won't fade.
As the last leaf falls, in love’s embrace, tears are paid.
In the heart of autumn, joy and love slept,
To this warm embrace, I dedicate

As a DJ and producer, I am constantly in search of new and unique sounds to score a diverse set of assignments. For this playlist, my goal was to connect the dots between a series of recent favorites that, while diverse in sound, maintain a consistent energy and spirit throughout. Like leaves finding their way to the soil, each of these tracks takes me on its own distinct and meandering journey through the moment.

My intention with this playlist was to create a versatile soundtrack for various moments in your day. Whether you're working, dancing, cleaning, on the go, or just relaxing at home with loved ones, I aimed to curate a collection that seamlessly fits into your life.

I've always found it intriguing how our listening preferences change with the seasons. There's something special about how music reflects the atmosphere, and vice versa. As fall slowly and steadily marches in throughout the northeast, I find myself seeking out more soothing, introspecitve, uplifting, and melancholic selections.  It's always exciting to craft a playlist inspired by my current tastes and influences, as well as the environment and attitudes around me.

My musical taste is shaped by my life's unusual blend of cultures, experiences, and passions. Each track in this series reflects a piece of that story. I hope that these selections resonate with you just as much as they do with me <3

FILM
Obibini
Directed by Benoit Lalande

"For most of their history, Ghanaian beaches were reserved solely for working men due to a prevailing fear of drowning in the village. This restriction barred women from enjoying the ocean, confining them to household chores.

In 2017, a man named Justice Kwofie spearheaded a transformative movement along with his six brothers with the establishment of the Obibini Surf Club. This initiative not only challenged this gender-based inequality but also the cultural fear around drowning. The surf club empowered women, granting them rights and inspiring young girls to embrace surfing as a new passion.

Justice's visionary stance ushered in a wave of change along Ghanaian beaches, liberating women from historical limitations and sparking enthusiasm for the sport."

Kherou
Directed by Philip Kaminiak

"In today’s society, we worship success. Failure is something to be ashamed of, something to be hidden. This film is an unflinching look at failure. A story about how hard work doesn’t always pay off. We follow Kherou, a young wrestler in Dakar, through the ups and downs of his career. Shot entirely on 16mm, the rough look of the film echoes the harshness of his life. This is a film about embracing our failures. Because it’s our failures more than our successes that truly shape the people we are."
